Cataracts,Patient Education

Cataract surgery is one of the most effective and successful eye surgeries, restoring clear vision for millions of patients every year. However, some patients notice their vision becoming cloudy again weeks, months, or even years after the surgery.

This does not mean your cataract has come back. Instead, this condition is known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO) or a secondary cataract.

What Causes a Secondary Cataract?

During cataract surgery, your cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL is placed inside a thin, transparent membrane called the lens capsule. Over time, the back part of this capsule can become cloudy, blocking light from reaching the retina and causing symptoms similar to cataracts.

Common signs of PCO include:

  • Blurry or hazy vision that seems to be returning
  • Increased glare or halos around lights
  • Trouble reading or seeing details clearly
  • Difficulty driving at night

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, YAG Laser Capsulotomy can help restore your vision quickly and painlessly.

What Is YAG Laser Capsulotomy?

YAG Laser Capsulotomy is a safe, non-invasive laser procedure designed to treat posterior capsule opacification by creating a small opening in the cloudy capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly again.

Unlike cataract surgery, this procedure does not require any incisions, stitches, or recovery downtime. It’s performed in-office and typically takes only a few minutes.

Benefits of YAG Laser Capsulotomy at Eye Care of San Diego

Quick and Comfortable: The procedure takes just a few minutes and is virtually pain-free.

Immediate Vision Improvement: Many patients notice sharper, clearer vision within hours.

Long-Lasting Results: Once the capsule is opened, the cloudiness does not return.

Safe and Effective: YAG laser capsulotomy has an excellent safety record and minimal risk of complications.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Before the Procedure:

Your eye doctor will conduct a full evaluation, including a dilated eye exam, to confirm that PCO is the cause of your cloudy vision. If you are a candidate, the procedure can often be scheduled promptly.

During the Procedure:

  • Numbing eye drops are applied for comfort.
  • You will sit in front of a specialized laser device, similar to the one used for eye exams.
  • The laser creates a tiny opening in the cloudy capsule behind the lens implant.
  • The entire process usually takes 5–10 minutes, and no incisions are made.

After the Procedure:

  • Most patients experience clearer vision almost immediately.
  • You may be given prescription eye drops to reduce inflammation.
  • Normal activities can typically be resumed the same day.
