Light Adjustable Lens

What are Cataracts?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s crystalline lens due to the clumping of natural proteins in the eye. As the area grows larger and more dense, it can become increasingly difficult for light rays to pass through the lens onto the retina (the back layer of the eye). This causes vision to be blurry and distorted – like looking through a dirty, streaked window. Once vibrant colors will begin to appear dull/faded and contrast/depth perception can be affected. Problems with glare and starbursts can make it difficult to drive, especially at night.

Cataract Surgery with the Revolutionary Light Adjustable Lens Restores Clear Vision

At Eye Care of San Diego, we offer our cataract patients the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) as a revolutionary cataract solution. Why do we feel the LAL is so revolutionary? It’s a truly personalized cataract experience. In short, it’s cataract surgery, only better.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only FDA-approved IOL that can be adjusted after cataract surgery to give patients clearer vision and reduce the need for eyeglasses. The LAL is made of a special photosensitive material that changes the shape and power of the implanted lens in response to ultraviolet light. After the eye has healed from cataract surgery, the surgeon can optimize vision results (if necessary) using a series of 2-4 non-invasive, painless light treatments over 1-2 weeks. Patients have the unique ability to test drive their vision during this timeframe to get it just right. When the vision goals have been obtained, a final light treatment is used to lock in the results. Note: Patients must wear special UV protective glasses during all waking hours (from the time of lens implantation until 24 hours after the final lock-in light treatment is completed).

John E. Bokosky, M.D., F.A.C.S., Medical Director and Cataract Surgeon at Eye Care of San Diego, is featured in a USA TODAY online article regarding his experiences with the Light Adjustable Lens. “Traditional cataract surgery gives excellent results, but the final visual outcomes can be unpredictable,” says Dr. Bokosky. “The Light Adjustable Lens is a groundbreaking technology that allows us to personalize cataract surgery – even after the procedure – to produce optimal vision for our patients’ needs.”
